If you want to achieve any big goal in life, share it with others. It keeps you accountable.
For those of you who have been reading along you know I recently started running. If we’ve met you also know, I don’t have a runner’s body.
A friend challenged me to run a marathon, I naively said ‘sure’ and then I shared this goal with the world. The act of making myself accountable to you guys (those who read this blog) helped me cross the finish line.

There are a million metaphors for running a marathon and yep; it’s cool when you cross the finish line. However, I think, what’s more important is the lessons you learn along the way.
Here is what my marathon taught me.
You are stronger than you think you are – setting and achieving a goal is so much more mental than physical. I’ve learned no matter how much it hurts, how painful it might be; you can keep going. What have you been avoiding that maybe if you go through the ‘pain’ (whatever that looks like for you), you will come out the other side even stronger? Strength for you might mean bravery to ask for a promotion, courage to ask forgiveness, or determination to start your company. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. You are stronger than you think you are.
It’s a team effort – one person runs the race, and it takes a team to get them there. My team was the most awesome team ever (click here to read about them). Choose your team well. Surround yourself with VIPs (very inspiring people) and eliminate VDPs (very draining people). To achieve any major goal requires the best cheer squad who believe in you. When someone says they believe in you – it changes your world.
Some things take time – I am all about Folding Time: achieving twice as much in half the time … And some things just take A LOT of time! Running a marathon … well that’s a whole lot of 15 minutes running over and over again. Achieving anything worthwhile requires time, attention and energy. Don’t be afraid to invest time in something you believe in.
Am I glad I ran a marathon? Sure. Would I do it again? Sure. Can anyone do it? Absolutely yes!
What’s your marathon? What’s the one thing you have always wanted to do, but didn’t think you could? You are stronger than you think you are, surround yourself with people who believe in you and invest the time, and you can conquer the world!
