Productive Leaders Sleep 8 Hours

By June 1, 2012No Comments

Yesterday a fabulous thought leader Karen Roy, shared this article with me from FastCompany Magazine. It outlines how Eli Broad (creator of two Fortune 500 companies), works 24/7 and still gets 8 hours of sleep. It is worth a quick read and a couple of the techniques he shared I really enjoyed:

Productive language – his phrase ‘Let’s move on’ – I love it when people have their own language to help manage time and conversations. One of my favorites is to open a meeting with ‘what’s on your agenda for our meeting today’ or when someone calls my first response is ‘how can I help you today?” – what phrases do you use?

Productive behaviors – getting quiet before sleep (Matt Church talks about this in his book HighLife 24/7 and maybe Adreneline Junkies?) – as women many of us are guilty of still checking in with our email, office, practice before sleeping – I love the distinction of time zones. Do you make a distinction between your practice and your evening routine?

Productive delegating – knowing what you are good at and delegating the rest. I love his phrase ‘If you can’t delegate, it’s you, it’s not them’. Sometimes we believe we are the best person to do the job and we can do it ‘quicker’ but that doesn’t make it right (or productive), it  is easy to be busy (and that’s not productive either). I was reminded of this recently in a conversation when Matt said ‘let’s not major in minor things’.

As busy women leaders we want to be conscious of growing our practice or your team within your company, and focusing our attention on the highest impact activities – it is easy to get distracted by meetings, conversations, and tasks. What do you do to stay focused on your practice? Love to hear your thoughts, please share them here in our blog.
