Notes from Neen: Can you Say what they Can’t Unhear?

By September 8, 2024No Comments

How cool is this book title by my smarty pants friend Tamsen Webster: Say What they Can’t Unhear!

This is a special edition of “Notes from Neen” so you can meet one of the most brilliant message designers I know. Full disclosure, I was one of the privileged people who got a copy of the book to read before it went to press and I read it in one sitting, seriously! I made so many notes and it has changed the way I approach messaging with my clients and audiences globally.

And that might happen to you too!

Tamsen Webster, founder of the Message Design Institute, has a crazy impressive career: 20+ years as a message strategist and highly requested keynote speaker, author of Find Your Red Thread, and four years as a executive producer of TEDx Cambridge (many of those coached by Tamsen went on to be featured on the TED.com site, that’s a really big deal!). With a brilliant mind and huge heart, she has spent her career helping organizations craft messages to make transformational change.

Her latest book will be compulsory reading for every CEO and their team that I work with. Yes I bought it in bulk! This a MUST-READ book for every leader who wants to build messages that build buy-in from their colleagues, clients, and their community.

Let me share with you a little about Say What They Can’t Unhear, and why it’s so important for any leader.

Change isn’t an easy sell.

And, in business, pivoting in a new direction requires teams to work together cooperatively. While a half-hearted agreement to adopt a common goal may get you short-term momentum, if you want to initiate lasting change that creates sustained action, you need to give your audience a reason to believe. You need, as the title of this book suggests, to say what they can’t unhear.

Tamsen has written a compact and actionable guide that will get you thinking differently about where change comes from and how to initiate it.

By introducing and exploring nine “persuasion proverbs,” she highlights the behavioral, cognitive, and psychological principles that underpin lasting change, and offers a powerful alternative to the standard tactics of influence and persuasion. The outlined concepts are easy to remember, simple to implement, and will give you the tools to transform any audience of lukewarm prospects into passionate believers.

If you’re looking to spark change in your audience in a way that has them excited and motivated, that pushes them beyond temporary action, and that makes them feel empowered instead of manipulated, then Say What They Can’t Unhear is the resource you need in your back pocket.

(By the way, when you see the who’s who of the zoo that has endorsed her book, you don’t just have to take my word for it!)

I have a confession to make, I have been a Tamsen fan fooooorrrreeeevvver! I knew who she was before we were friends — she is legendary in thought leadership circles for her brilliant message design process and was dubbed the “Idea Whisperer” for her incredible clarity in helping people find their core message — and I had a crush on her brain. If you know me well, you know I am very attracted to how people think. Smart brains are very sexy to me.

Tamsen became not only a consultant to me, she became an accountability partner and a dear friend. Watching her body of work expand and seeing the transformation global organizations have experienced through her work inspires me and I hope it inspires you too.
