Day Sixteen – Eighteen 23rd – 25th April 2011
My objective: Invest 30 days in each area of my life to accelerate my own impactivityTM in the world.
You might recall one of the challenges I set myself as part of this 30 day Impactivity challenge was to have a real, undistracted, fully attentive 30 minute conversation with someone. This has proved to be more challenging that I originally thought.
You know we chat with people constantly … but I find that often it is distracted chatting. Over the past few weeks I have found I have some bad habits when chatting that include thinking about my to-do list, sneaking a look at my email, preparing my next sentence (before the person has even finished their own sentence!), giving great listening signals but not really listening. Do you ever do that?
My very intelligent friend and advisor Donovan gave me some brilliant advice when he was 5 years old (yes you read it right) he said “Neen you need to listen with your eyes’. He was right! Now at a mature 11 years old he continues to challenge me on this lesson and keeps me honest.
Can you listen with your eyes more? If so, how? I commit to removing devices from my hands and line of sight to avoid sneaking a peek at things, stop having conversations in my head (that makes me sound a little crazy) and truly listening with my eyes. What do you commit to?
How can you listen with your eyes with people you love?
