Within my industry (National Speakers Association) we are so fortunate to have many thought leaders and one of my favorites is Dan Thurmon. Recently he peformed a TED talk: Off Balance On Purpose
I love Dan’s perspective on work life balance. Do yourself a favor and invest 18 minutes to watch his Ted Talk here: TED Talk: Off Balance On Purpose with Dan Thurmon
Some of the brilliance he shares includes:
Launch yourself into uncertainty with energy, commitment and drive – LOVE this! So often we need to get uncomfortable for change to occur – that’s progress, that’s productive!
Sometimes we find purpose when others take an interest in us and give us an opportunity to grow – this is so true! When others believe in us it has a huge impact on our confidence and the way we show up in the world!
If you think what you are doing now is difficult, it’s time to try something harder – he is so right! It’s easy to do the same old thing day in day out – the most productive people I know don’t do more… they do less (however they do more of the things that energize them) – what can you do today to apply his advice?
It’s not about increasing your pace; it’s about slowing down a little that you begin to notice more opportunities – this is truly one of my favorite pieces of advice. Often our clients think they have to be more busy, do more, see more, answer more email – that’s not actually productive – busy is NOT productive. My philosophy… sometimes you have to slow down to speed up!
Professionally and personally it is important to focus on 5 spheres that include work, relationships, health, spiritual growth and your personal interests – this great overview of all important aspects of our life is a reminder that we can’t work 24/7 – to live a more fulfilling and enjoyable life (and to be more fun to play with) we need to focus across each of these areas.
You need to live in congruence with your spiritual purpose – LOVE this- whatever your beliefs this is so powerful. Are you investing time in this area of your life and if not, what could you do to focus more in this area?
My clients often ask I how to achieve work life balance. Many of you have heard me say, I don’t believe in work life balance. I do believe in work life integration. It is about finding what works for you and managing your energy, your environment, your expectations and your emotions. Click here to read a white paper on work life integration.

Neen… thanks for sharing Dan’s TEDx talk. It is a great video that all should watch. He crams a lot of information on balance and life into 18 minutes. I recommend people invest the short amount of time to watch his talk.
You are so right! Dan is a genius and his delivery rocks.
