In the speaking industry there are many legends (and not enough space to list all here). When I moved to America from Sydney I’d listen to acceptance speeches from the world’s best speakers and without fail… each would mention the same legend.
In every industry there are many coaches, mentors, programs, books and courses all designed to help make you a ‘better’ (insert your profession here).
Several years ago I reached out to the legend that was always thanked in acceptance speeches and interviewed him about his process and investment (I gulped a little when he told me the cost as I wasn’t in the same earning place as many of my speaker friends, but I knew he would be worth every cent… I just couldn’t invest that at the time). My calendar also included more workshops and breakout sessions – I wasn’t doing as many opening keynote speeches as I do now. So I had to wait until the time was right.
Fast forward to April 2014 when I had the privilege to spend an AH-mazing 48 hours with the legend and his lovely wife. From the moment they greeted me in their tiny three gate airport until the moment they dropped me back at that airport it was worth every cent and every minute… and so much more.
Spending time with this legend was like being back in kindergarten and sitting at the feet of your favorite teacher. Do you remember the teacher that would smile at you, read you a story and you’d sit mesmerized by them; listening intently to every word, watching every facial expression and realizing you were in the presence of greatness; well that was me sitting at the feet of the master. This legend and his phenomenally accomplished wife have created an incredible apartment within their home to host guests. We spent time working on my speech and answering questions about the speaking business and it was such a powerful use of time and energy. I left with a new speech, new excitement and new energy, feeling totally refreshed. Time disappeared; it felt like I had been there for a week not just a few days.
