Today I was inspired by a blog from one of my dearest friends, Megan Kristel. She made such a great point about how we are all sharing so much of our lives online and ‘showing off’ and yet we aren’t connecting to the moment. She said ‘don’t be so concerned with what people will think of your moment; instead, try and experience it for yourself’. It got me thinking.
I am an extreme extrovert. I love being with people. I love learning about people. I love seeing other people’s lives online (through sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram). I have to admit I am also one of those people who might suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out). You can read Martha Beck’s thoughts on this here:
It seems that other people’s lives are far more interesting than finishing a proposal, calling back a client, doing a workout or finalizing a big presentation… or is that just me? A tool I have found useful is software for MAC (sorry PC users) called Anti Social – for $15 bucks you can install it and it blocks certain websites and email for timeframes you designate. I used it for 3 hours today and was hyper productive and NOT distracted. And guess what… I didn’t miss anything online.
If you want to achieve more in less time, find your way to be ‘anti-social’ I promise, people’s lives will still be there, lived large on Facebook and you can ‘catch up’ when you have finished your biggest priority items first.
