You can become more organised by investing time to manage your desk and environment so you can achieve amazing things in your day.
Keep your desk free of paper
Establish files for projects you are working on, place articles for review in a reading file, remove all paper so you only work on one piece of paper at a time.
Use headphones if you work in an open plan
Invest in a set of headphones and walkman so you can listen to music and focus on the task you are working on. This sends a signal to others around you not to disturb you. You can even put the headphones on without music and get work done!
Remove your in-tray from your desk
Get rid of it all together if you can! If not, place this in-tray out of sight so you don’t get distracted by the contents. By having it in front of you it can make you feel guilty as it constantly fills during the day. By moving it out of sight you will focus on the job or project at hand. Educate others to leave doucmetns on your desk and that way you will see them when they arrive.
Create a reading file and keep it in your desk drawer
Collect articles, magazines you want to read and the “FYI” documents and place them in your reading file. Allocate time each week to review this file. Keep it off your desk.
Set up your PC, monitor and phone to ensure all items are easy to reach and you are comfortable when sitting at your desk.
Don’t forget to adjust your chair too. Remove clutter and only have essential equipment on your desk.
Place a photo or phrase that motivates you in your veiw
Use a visual aid to assist motivate you towards your goals. It could be a holiday destination you want to visit, a photo of your family or a saying that inspires you. Surround yourself with positive images.
Keep stationary in drawers or cupboards
Not on your desk – get rid of the clutter on your desk. Keep the desk clear for essential items only.
Clear your desk at the completion of each day
Take 10 minutes each day to clear your desk of dirty coffee cups, empty water bottles, put away pens and note pads, file documents and check your in tray. Leave each day with a clear desk so you can start each day afresh and also avoid security concerns by locking away confidential information.
Don’t eat at your desk
Make a point of leaving your desk environment to eat so you can enjoy the food and not be distracted.
Keep a water bottle on your desk
To assist you drink 8 glasses of water each day fill a water jug or bottle and try to drink 3 glasses in the first 60 minutes of your day.
