Tips on handling functions

Functions can be fun. Get the most out of them by following a few simple guidelines.

Arrive early

Ensure you allow sufficient time to travel to the destination and freshen up before entering the room.

Chat to the person on the registration desk.

Often this person can introduce you to other guests and explain the facilities to you.

Wear a nametag

Even if one hasn’t been prepared for you, carry one with you to make it easier for other guests.

Take business cards with you.

Give these to people you meet and always have a supply handy. A tip is to carry blank business cards with you for others to use.

Ask for business cards from those you meet.

After the event, take 5 minutes to write them a note reminding them how it was nice to meet them and wish them well.

Meet the speaker.

Make an effort to introduce yourself (where possible) and thank them for sharing their ideas with you. People appreciate feedback.

Dress well

Make sure you are confident in your suit or outfit – and ensure you are comfortable.

Be brave, speakers appreciate your enthusiasm.
